Welcome to the Family!!!

Here is a little more to know about our four rercruits that make up the 2010 recruiting class!!

D'Shara Strange

1) Do you have a game day ritual? I eat a green apple (because they are my favorite) & I listen to Brooklyn girls by Charles Hamilton

2) Something fun or unique about you that you want Bear fans to know about you? I love to jet ski

3) Why did you choose Northern Colorado? It's a really good fit, home away from home. I love the coaching staff & my teammates

4) How is your senior year going and what are your goals for you and your team this year?My senior year is going well. My goal for my team is to be league champions & make it past second round in the play offs

Kim Lockridge

1) Do you have a game day ritual? Take a nap. Listen to music on my ipod before the game

2) Something fun or unique about you that you want Bear fans to know about you? I like to bake and I work at Wendy's :)

3) Why did you choose Northern Colorado? I love the school, the coaches and the players. It was a perfect fit.

4) How is your senior year going and what are your goals for you and your team this year? I am very busy between all my AP classes, volleyball and basketball, work, and my 6 am medicine class. My goals are first team all state, and for the team, final four

Molly Duehn

1) Do you have a game day ritual? I don't really have that big of a pre-game ritual but for high school season I like to get mentally prepared for the game by watching the jv team play while listening to my Ipod. Each season I make a play list that gets me pumped up for the games.
2) Something fun or unique about you that you want Bear fans to know about you? Both of my elbows are crazy double jointed!
3) Why did you choose Northern Colorado? I choose Northern Colorado because I fell in love with the campus and my future team. I really enjoyed the recruiting process with the coaching staff. They made if fun and exciting. Also, a change in climate will be unique and fun! It will take me awhile to get use to the altitude, but I can't wait!
4) How is your senior year going and what are your goals for you and your team this year? My senior year so far is going great! My volleyball team just got 3rd in state after not making it past the section finals in 11 years. It was a great way to end my volleyball career and it just sparks the energy to do the same thing in basketball. I have been on the Varsity Basketball team since 8th grade and I still haven't made it to state since I have been here. We have a good chance of making it, but that is our main team goal this year. My personal goal is to break the schools scoring record. I scored my 1,000 point at the end of my junior year. I also would like to make the All-State Team this year.

Kirsten Hess

1) Do you have a game day ritual? I always do a specific stretching routine before every game

2) Something fun or unique about you that you want Bear fans to know about you? I am Hawaiian

3) Why did you choose Northern Colorado? The Coaches are great, the girls on the team are really fun and easy to get along with, its close to home, and I feel like Northern Colorado is the place for me.

4) How is your senior year going and what are your goals for you and your team this year? The goals for the Mullen girls basketball team this year are to be the Centennial League Champions again and to win the state championship. I do believe that this year we will be able to achieve this goal.

Shout-Out: Courtney Kranz

Hi everyone! Wow, this year has been going by so fast. I can’t believe we’re already preparing for finals. I’m a Political Science and Business-Finance major, and my class schedule has kept me pretty busy. Classes are going well especially now that midterms are out of the way. For Halloween this year the Residence Halls put on a program where kids from the neighborhood could come trick-or-treat in a safe environment in the dorms, and Kaisha, Lauren, Victoria, and I decided to dress up and pass out candy to the kids. Also, our first game in the WNIT is coming up Friday November 13, and I know that we are all getting excited. Everybody is ready to show how hard we worked during preseason and start playing. Physical therapy has been going well for me. I’ve been getting into some more drills at practice and in the weight room. I’m hoping to be back playing soon. While it has been a really fun fall, I’m certainly looking forward to the season!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Kodiak Club

This year Coach White is introducing the Kodiak Club. It’s a club for the elite strength athletes on our women’s basketball team. In order to be a member here are the guidelines: Squat 1.5 times your body weight, Power Clean your body weight, and Bench 80% of your body weight.

This year we had several players on the bubble, but Whitley Cox was the only one to join the CLUB officially. The girls have 3 chances a year to make it; the first week back from summer, before the start of the season, and before they go home for the summer. Even though we only have one member at this point in time, everyone on the team increased their max in every category.

Great job Bears!!!

Shout-Out from: Jayne Strand

Hello Bear fans! My name is Jayne Strand and I am new to the team this year! I just transferred from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa so I will be coming in as a junior. Kirkwood was a great experience, we won the national championship both years I was there. Now I am really excited to be here in Greeley and see what being a bear is all about! It has been a little bit of an adjustment so far with the workload at the D1 level compared to junior college, but everyone here is helping me make it as easy of a transition as possible. Last week at our team golf fundraiser is was really fun to meet friends and families of the girls here as well as some fans and boosters. Everyone here is so nice! They have really made me feel at home. I found out the other day that it just so happens I am not the only 20 year old girl who likes to rollerblade! Maybe it is an Iowa thing… but all the girls from Iowa have roller blades here too so the other day we all went for a stroll. I'm sure it was a sight for anyone driving down the street to see three girls on wheels towering well over six feet! I’m really excited for the season to come and to get to meet a lot of wonderful people here in Greeley. Go Bears!

Pre-Season 09-10:Hurt So Good!

Hey Bear Fans!! It's that time again! Official practice is right around the corner, which means we will be wrapping up pre-season workouts in a weeks time!! Here is a preview of how hard the girls have worked this pre-season........GO BEARS!!

Shout-Out from Lizzie Cooper:

"Hey, it’s Lizzie! If you didn’t know I am from Queensland, Australia. I am currently starting my senior year for the Bears and Coach White. Over the past summer I travelled home to Australia for 3 months. It was great to see my family and friends. I spent as much time as I could in the sun, even though it was winter! Apart from that I worked out, played basketball and enjoyed being back in my own house, having Mum and Dad to look after me. Pre- season has started off great! It's never easy, of course, but it feels good to get back into proper shape. I am looking forward to a very successful season this year. Our team is looking great so far and I am quite confident that we will make it to the Big Sky Tournament!!"

Back to School!

Classes have officially started!! The girls got their books bright and early this morning and have successfully completed the first day of classes. The Bears will jump right into preseason next week with strength and conditioning testing and also get their first individual workouts under their belts. Should be some extremely busy, yet exciting upcoming weeks!!

Shout-Out from Courtney Stoermer:

"Hey Bear fans! I hope your summer has been going as fast as mine! This summer I started my first semester as a nursing student. Talk about stressful! On my first day I had never been so overwhelmed and stressed, but now I only have three weeks left of my first semester. I learned the basics of nursing, and more importantly, the skills to nursing. I have done a full assessment, which for example is when you are new at a hospital and the nurse collects all your medical history and runs tests on you. I have also learned wound care, how to insert a foley catheter, how to start an IV, administer medicines ordered by the physician, and to provide sterile fields of care. The program is very intense but I have gotten to know my classmates very well; they are like my second team since we are together every day for about 8 hours. I started my clinicals in a real medical setting which is intimidating but will hopefully go well. My summer has been going so fast with all my school work, by the time I get my work-outs in and do home work my day is over! Talk about a good summer?! It only makes me look forward to the upcoming school year and season that much more!"

Bears Set to Play New Mexico Lobos in First Round Action of Preseason WNIT

The University of Northern Colorado women's basketball team is one of 16 Division I teams making up the field of the 2009 Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament. A total of 11 of the 16 teams played in the postseason in 2008-09. First round action begins November 13 with second round action set for Nov. 15-16, third round action for Nov. 18-19 and the championship game on Nov. 22.

The Bears play at New Mexico in the first round on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7pm MT in one of the best-attended arenas in women's basketball. Last season, the Lobos advanced to the quarterfinals of the postseason WNIT and return all but two players from a 25-11 team. The winner of Northern Colorado and UNM will play the winner of Florida Gulf Coast-UTEP.

The Bears are the first Big Sky Conference team to be selected for the preseason WNIT since Idaho State competed in 2006 and lost to BYU in the first round.

"This is a great honor for both Northern Colorado and women's basketball," said Head Coach Jaime White. "We are really looking forward to playing at New Mexico to start our season. It will be a great experience for our team to play in that environment and begin the year with three games against the quality of competition the WNIT has selected.”

Shout-Out from Jamie Schroeder:

"Graduation….I didn’t think it would ever get here but now that it has come and gone, I’m busier than ever! I decided to stay at UNC and get my Masters degree in Exercise Physiology for the following 2 years. I will also be a Graduate Assistant for Coach White, who has already put me to work! This past weekend I got to sneak away because my Dad decided to throw a graduation barbecue. The weather wasn’t cooperative, so people ended up leaving early to get out of the rain. I wasn’t upset about it because there was tons of great food left over for me to bring home, including some of my dad’s infamous homemade vanilla ice-cream! YUMMY! Rehab on my knee is coming along. I just recently got released for full range of motion, which means I will be spending plenty of time on the bike for cardio! Lance Armstrong here I come!!"

Shout-Out from Cayla Maneotis:

"So far my summer has been pretty good. After finals week I went home for a few days. It was nice to see my parents and brother, as well as a few friends. Since being back in Greeley, I have been doing my weights and basketball workouts. I am also in the process of getting a babysitting job for a few hours each day, which will hopefully help me with my boredom! I also just got done with jury duty, where I was a part of a twelve person jury. It was very interesting and I got to learn several new legal terms. Hopefully it will be a few years before I have to serve again! I also participated in the Boulder Boulder this year with a couple friends. My favorite part was getting to see the different parts of Boulder and just being in beautiful Colorado!!"

Pre-Season National Invitation Tournament on the Horizon

Scheduling for the 2009-2010 season is nearly complete. We are starting off our year playing in the Pre-Season National Invitational Women’s Tournament, where we will play 3, possibly 4, nationally ranked teams. This past winter we got to travel to Cancun, Mexico to play in the Caribbean Classic. Our division included two top 25 teams in Florida State and, the recently undefeated national champs, UCONN. Also in our division was the University of Washington from the Pac-10 conference, whom we defeated with a last second shot! On top of gaining valuable experience, this opportunity gave us a spot in the invitation only pre-season WNIT.

Watch out Tiger, here come the Bears!

Look out! Summer is finally here, which means plenty of golfing! The Second Annual Women’s Basketball Golf Tournament is scheduled to take place August 29th and you can count on all of the Bears taking advantage of the gorgeous weather!!

New Bear Faces: Northern Colorado WBB welcomes Jayne Strand and Emily Elliott to the Bear family!

Jayne Strand joins us from Kirkwood Junior College in Iowa. During her 2 years there, Kirkwood was back to back National Champions!
Coach White’s Quote on Jayne:
“Jayne will bring an inside presence. She’s a great rebounder and will bring championship experience to our team."

Emily Elliott is a Junior College transfer from Casper College in Casper, Wyoming. Emily will be returning to Colorado since she is a graduate from Ponderosa High School in Parker, CO. Emily is interested in pursuing a degree in Pre-Law.
Coach White’s Quote on Emily:
“We’re excited because she’s an in-state kid. We think she
’ll be able to help us from beyond the arc right away. Both Jayne and Emily give us instant experience to start off the year!”

Camp Time!!

June is just around the corner, which is Basketball Camp Season in our neck of the woods. To kick the month off right we have our Bear Cub camp June 8-9, dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of basketball to young basketball lovers in a fun and entertaining environment. June 14-16 is our individual camp where we focus on developing all levels of players. It’s a great opportunity to improve your game while having fun! We already have nearly 100 teams scheduled to attend this year’s team camp June 25-27, which is nearly double from last year! GO BEARS!!

Laundry Basketball Anyone?!?

Hey Bear Fans! Today was the big commercial shoot for Comcast at Mountain Meadows Premier Senior Living facility and it went great! Everyone had a blast playing laundry basketball and all the girls are looking forward to Friday night Bingo!! Women’s Basketball logged over 700 plus hours of community service this past year, finishing in the top 3 of all athletic teams. Giving back to the Greeley community is at the top of our team’s priority list and we look forward to another event filled year!!
